MBS 547: Advanced Molecular Biology

This graduate-level course provides an advanced, mechanistic treatment of the molecular processes that underpin the storage, expression, maintenance and transmission of genetic information in eukaryotic cells. Building on foundational molecular and cell biology, it examines genome organization and chromatin dynamics; DNA replication, repair and recombination; the transcriptional, post-transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of gene expression; RNA biology and non-coding RNAs; translation and protein homeostasis; and the molecular signalling and cell-cycle networks whose dysregulation drives human disease. Emphasis is placed on primary-literature analysis, contemporary experimental and omics technologies (including CRISPR-based genome editing and next-generation sequencing), and the integration of molecular data to formulate and test hypotheses, thereby preparing students for independent research and doctoral study.
