This course examines the molecular and immunological basis of infectious diseases and the principles of vaccinology. It covers the biology of bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal pathogens, host–pathogen interactions, mechanisms of pathogenesis and immune evasion, antimicrobial agents and the molecular basis of resistance. It then addresses the principles, platforms (live, subunit, viral-vector and mRNA) and evaluation of vaccines, together with emerging and re-emerging infections and outbreak response. Emphasis is placed on critically appraising infectious-disease research and on designing rational vaccine and therapeutic strategies.
